Edinburgh, Scotland – The Scots certainly reached for the stars when they set out to build a replica of the Parthenon on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. Proposed by the Highland Society in 1816, the National Monument was intended to commemorate Scottish military members who perished during the Napoleonic Wars. Novelist Sir Walter Scott was amongst those who rallied behind it, resulting in the foundation being laid in 1822.
